Apple plans to adopt a distinct strategy from Samsung when it comes to integrating AI features into iPhones.

Samsung has introduced a slew of AI-powered features with the Galaxy S24, branding it as their inaugural "AI Phone" in response to the burgeoning AI trend. Apple, poised to follow suit, is charting a slightly different course compared to its Korean counterpart.

Reports from Mark Gurman via 9To5Mac suggest that Apple's AI features on iPhones will rely solely on an in-house developed Large Language Model (LLM), with all processing occurring on-device. The company is expected to emphasize the privacy and speed advantages of on-device AI processing, with these features slated to debut alongside iOS 18 and showcased at WWDC 2024.

While on-device AI offers privacy and speed benefits, it may not match the power of cloud-based AI processing. However, Apple may choose to introduce AI features optimized for on-device processing, such as improved auto-replies and Siri functionality.

This contrasts with Samsung's approach, which blends on-device and cloud-powered AI features. Samsung utilizes its own LLM and Google's Gemini for AI processing, allowing users to toggle between local and cloud processing. As observed with the Galaxy S24 and older models running One UI 6.1, the speed of AI features varies depending on the workload and complexity.

While Apple has yet to unveil specific AI features for iOS 18, potential enhancements could include improved language translation, more accurate autocorrect, and advanced image editing capabilities. Recent reports indicated discussions between Apple and Google regarding the use of Gemini for iOS 18 AI features, although the status of this agreement remains uncertain.
