Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone Reunite with A24 for the Carlsen-Niemann Chess Scandal Story by Ben Mezrich.

A24, under its new directive to aggressively pursue projects, has outmaneuvered both Hollywood studios and streaming platforms to secure the rights to "Checkmate," a highly sought-after feature package based on a book proposal by Ben Mezrich, known for his works adapted into films such as "The Social Network" and "Dumb Money."

If negotiations finalize, "Checkmate" will reunite Emma Stone with Nathan Fielder, both of whom graced the latest edition of The Hollywood Reporter magazine and starred in the Showtime series "The Curse." Fielder is set to direct, while Stone will produce alongside her husband, Dave McCary, through their Fruit Tree banner. This collaboration marks a reunion with A24, which previously backed "The Curse." While the book deal is either closed or nearing completion, talent deals are still being negotiated.

In typical Mezrich style, "Checkmate" delves into an esoteric and evolving true-life story. According to the circulated proposal, the book will delve into the biggest scandal in chess history, focusing on the clash between Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen and the controversial figure of Hans Niemann. The narrative explores Niemann's alleged cheating during a high-stakes match, which sparked a scandal reverberating throughout the chess world. Beyond the rivalry and scandal, the story delves into the rise of a billion-dollar chess industry and the clash between tradition and innovation in the game.

The sale of "Checkmate" unfolded akin to a classic chess maneuver, reminiscent of traditional spec or package sales. The 12-page book proposal, attached with various talents and producers, was circulated to different studios and streamers. For instance, Ron Howard was linked to direct, and screenwriter Alex Convery led a package pitched to Amazon. Offers were also made to Netflix and Apple, with Welsh actor Taron Egerton attached to star, and Warner Bros., with producer David Heyman involved.

Amidst ongoing negotiations with streamers and studios, A24 made a bold move with a time-constrained offer that guaranteed seven figures, ultimately securing the project. This unprecedented move surprised industry insiders and signaled A24's newfound competitiveness.

A24, known for its distinctive and budget-friendly productions, has recently announced plans to expand its portfolio, as evidenced by its latest project, Alex Garland's thriller "Civil War," which boasted a $55 million budget. While facing challenges in acquiring certain projects, such as Danny Boyle's "28 Years Later," A24 remains committed to asserting its influence and pursuing projects aligned with its vision.

Mezrich is represented by CAA, while Stone and Fruit Tree are represented by WME and Anonymous Content. Fielder is represented by UTA and Rise Management.
